Most people carry around a rough, unspoken theory of their own mind: it was sharpest sometime in their twenties, and it has been fading, gently or otherwise, ever since.
That theory tends to survive mostly because nobody breaks “being sharp” down into its separate pieces. Researchers Joshua Hartshorne and Laura Germine did exactly that, testing a range of distinct mental abilities rather than treating the mind as one dial that turns down uniformly with age.
What they found breaks the mind apart into pieces that peak on their own separate schedules, some absurdly early and some absurdly late, decades apart from each other. Here are four of those pieces, in the order they peak across a lifetime.
1. Raw processing speed peaks first, around eighteen or nineteen
The speed at which someone can take in new information and respond to it turns out to be the shortest-lived cognitive skill of the bunch. It rises through childhood and adolescence, peaks around age eighteen or nineteen, and then, in the researchers’ own description, starts declining almost immediately afterward.
Anyone who has ever felt that their reflexes or their ability to cram new material were sharper in their teens than they are now was likely picking up on something real, not just nostalgia. It’s also probably the single biggest reason the broader myth exists at all. Processing speed is early, visible, and easy to notice slipping, a video game reaction time, a harder time catching a fast-moving conversation, so it ends up standing in for the whole mind, even though it’s only one piece of it.
2. Short-term memory keeps climbing into the mid-twenties
Working memory, the capacity to hold and juggle a handful of new pieces of information at once, follows a slightly longer arc. It continues improving until around age twenty-five, holds roughly steady for several years, and only begins a measurable decline around thirty-five.
That gives it close to a decade and a half of runway beyond where processing speed already peaked, evidence that even skills that sound similar, taking in information quickly versus holding onto it briefly, don’t actually share a timeline. It’s a small gap compared to what comes next on this list, but it’s already enough to break the idea that the mind ages as a single unit rather than as a loose collection of separately aging parts.
3. Reading other people’s emotions keeps improving into your forties and fifties
This is the finding that cuts most directly against the assumption that everything mental gets worse with age. The ability to accurately judge what someone else is feeling, whether from a fleeting expression in a photograph or the tone underneath what they’re saying, does not peak anywhere near young adulthood.
It kept rising for decades after processing speed had already started to fade, reaching its high point when participants were in their forties or fifties, more than two decades after the skill most people think of as mental sharpness had already begun its decline.
The size of the gap is what makes the finding land. A twenty-year-old and a fifty-year-old aren’t just similarly good at reading a room in different ways. On this specific measure, the fifty-year-old is typically doing meaningfully better, at the same age many people privately assume they’ve lost a step. It’s worth sitting with how counterintuitive that actually is.
The skill in question isn’t a niche or minor one either. Picking up on whether a coworker is annoyed, whether a friend’s cheerfulness is genuine or effortful, whether a stranger’s tone is joking or serious, is a skill people lean on constantly, and by most people’s own private timeline, it should have already started fading by fifty. The data says the opposite is closer to true.
4. Vocabulary keeps expanding into your late sixties and seventies
Crystallized knowledge, the accumulated store of facts, vocabulary, and general knowledge someone has built up over a lifetime, turns out to have the longest runway of all.
According to the same research, this kind of knowledge kept increasing into the late sixties or early seventies, even later than earlier studies had suggested. Whatever is being lost in processing speed by that point in life is, for a lot of people, being offset by decades of continued accumulation somewhere else entirely.
What the numbers behind this actually cover
It’s worth being precise about where these specific ages come from. The four peaks above are drawn from data on nearly 50,000 people who completed cognitive tests through the researchers’ web-based platforms, gameswithwords.org and testmybrain.org, the dataset behind the 2015 study itself.
Those same platforms, cumulatively, have drawn in millions of participants over the years the researchers have been running them, which is where a figure in the millions comes from. The specific age-by-age comparisons above, though, the ones that show processing speed peaking two full decades before emotional perception does, come from the smaller, more tightly analyzed slice of that larger pool.
None of that undercuts the finding. If anything, it’s a reminder that a single mental scorecard was never a realistic way to track a whole lifetime. Whatever any one person is losing at a given age, there’s a decent chance something else entirely is still quietly getting better, on its own schedule, largely unnoticed until someone actually measures it.
That’s a useful thing to sit with the next time a birthday lands on a number that used to sound old. The version of aging most people carry around, one long slide starting sometime after graduation, was built from noticing the one skill that happens to peak earliest and loudest. The three others on this list were peaking quietly, on their own schedules, the entire time nobody was watching for them.
