Every procedural crime show has run some version of the same scene. A detective leans across a metal table, waits for the suspect’s eyes to drop, and announces to a partner behind the glass that they’ve got their guy. The suspect glances away for half a second, and the show treats it as a confession. Decades of television, and plenty of workplace training seminars, have taught the same lesson: liars can’t hold your gaze.

The research on this doesn’t back it up, and it isn’t close. Psychologists have been testing the eye-contact theory for decades, across police interrogations, courtroom testimony, and staged lab experiments where people were asked to lie about something small on camera, and the pattern that keeps turning up is the same one: whatever a liar’s eyes are doing, it isn’t reliably different from what an honest person’s eyes are doing.

What the shows train people to look for

The idea that averted eyes mean a lie isn’t just a television convention. It shows up in how people describe their own instincts, in advice columns about spotting a cheating partner, and in interrogation training that predates most of the shows that later popularized it. The logic feels intuitive: a liar knows they’re lying, feels guilty or anxious about it, and that discomfort supposedly shows up as an inability to look someone in the eye. It’s a tidy theory, simple enough to teach in an afternoon seminar and confident enough to feel like expertise. It just isn’t what happens when researchers actually sit people down, ask half of them to lie, and check afterward whether anyone watching could tell the difference by counting how often they blinked or looked away.

What the research actually found

The most cited answer comes from a 2003 meta-analysis by psychologist Bella DePaulo and colleagues at the University of Virginia and the University of Missouri, published in Psychological Bulletin. The team pooled findings from 120 independent samples across 116 separate research reports, more than a hundred individual studies in total, covering over a thousand estimates of behaviors that are commonly assumed to signal deception.

Eye contact came out essentially flat. In testimony to Congress reviewing the science behind behavioral screening at airports, deception researcher Maria Hartwig of John Jay College of Criminal Justice summarized what DePaulo’s team found: “none of the measures of looking behavior supported the widespread belief that liars do not look their targets in the eye.” Hartwig noted that the 32 independent estimates of eye contact across the pooled studies produced a combined effect that was “almost exactly zero.”

Where the contrast actually lies

The gap between the television version and the research version isn’t that lying leaves no trace at all. It’s that the trace shows up in different places than eye contact, and it’s a lot less dramatic than a guilty glance away. Across the same body of research, cues tied to how a story is constructed, more hesitation, fewer specific details, less logical structure, tend to show a slightly stronger relationship to deception than anything involving the face or the eyes. None of these are reliable enough on their own to catch a liar with any confidence either. They’re simply less flat than eye contact, not genuinely diagnostic.

That’s the real contrast worth sitting with. Television offers a single, visible, satisfying tell. The research offers a scatter of weak, overlapping signals that even trained professionals struggle to read better than chance, and no single behavior, gaze included, that reliably separates a truth from a lie.

Where the belief actually costs something

This would matter less if the belief stayed confined to television writing rooms. It doesn’t. Police interview training, hiring managers sizing up a candidate, and ordinary people trying to work out whether a partner or a teenager is telling the truth all lean, at least a little, on the same assumption the shows keep reinforcing. A nervous job candidate who struggles to hold eye contact under the pressure of an interview isn’t lying about their resume. A grieving witness who looks away while describing something painful isn’t necessarily lying about what happened. Reading gaze aversion as guilt tends to penalize people who are anxious, shy, or simply exhausted, right alongside anyone who might actually be lying, and the research suggests it does a poor job of catching the second group anyway.

The stakes get higher in settings where a wrong read has real consequences: an interrogation room, a courtroom, an asylum hearing where an interviewer is trying to judge credibility through a translator and a video link. In those rooms, a belief that fails as reliably as gaze aversion isn’t a harmless quirk of human intuition. It’s a tool that consistently points the finger in directions that have nothing to do with the truth.

Why the myth keeps outliving the evidence

Part of the staying power probably comes down to how memorable a confirming instance feels compared to a disconfirming one. Someone recalls the one memorable time a shifty-eyed coworker turned out to be lying, and the memory sticks around for years, while the far more common case, a liar who looked them dead in the eye the whole time, doesn’t get filed away as evidence against the theory. It just doesn’t register as data at all.

Television deserves some of the blame too, precisely because eye contact is easy to film and easy to read from a wide shot. A character’s hesitation over word choice doesn’t translate to the screen the way a dropped gaze does, so the tell that make for good television isn’t the one that actually shows up in the research. The genre didn’t invent the belief, but it gave it a face, a close-up, and a dramatic pause, and that face has been hard to shake ever since.
