“You’ve got to be careful how you move your hands, because as you’re moving your hands, you may be changing the way you think,” Susan Goldin-Meadow told an audience at the Association for Psychological Science’s annual convention, where the University of Chicago psychologist was picking up a career award for decades of work on gesture and thought. It sounds like a small claim, but it runs against a common assumption.
Most people treat hand movement while talking as nervous energy leaking out, background noise with no real function, something to train out of a nervous presenter rather than protect. The research points somewhere more specific: the noise becomes useful only once it stops being random.
Researchers studying this divide adults into a few simple conditions and ask them to solve a problem, hold something else in mind, and explain their answer out loud. One group gets to gesture naturally. A second group is told to move their hands too, but only in meaningless circles, matching nothing about what they’re saying. A third group has to keep their hands still. Summarizing that design, along with the original 2012 study behind it, researchers Gordon, Scalise, and Ramani write that “these findings indicate that meaningful gestures to the task can lighten the speaker’s overall WM load during math tasks.”
The people who gestured with real content in their hands held onto more of the extra information they were juggling. The people spinning their hands in empty circles did not get the same benefit, even though they were moving just as much. Meaning carried the effect, and motion alone couldn’t substitute for it.
What the research actually tested
The setup matters here, because it’s easy to round this off into “talking with your hands is good for you,” which is not quite what was measured. In the original study, adults explained how they had solved math problems while also trying to remember an unrelated string of letters, a classic way to measure how much mental effort a task is quietly consuming in the background. People who used natural gesture while explaining, tracing shapes or motions tied to the actual math, remembered more of the letter string afterward. People who moved their hands in a way disconnected from the content, circles with no relationship to the problem, remembered no better than people who kept their hands flat on the table.
That comparison is the whole point. If gesture worked simply because moving the body burns off restlessness, the circle-drawing group should have done just as well as the natural-gesture group. It didn’t. Whatever gesture is doing for the brain during effortful speech, it depends on the movement standing in for something real: a shape, a direction, a relationship between two ideas. Motion by itself doesn’t buy the same effect.
How to let your hands actually help you think
Let your hands trace the idea, not the rhythm
Most people gesture on autopilot, a loose, repetitive flick that keeps time with their sentences rather than representing anything. The version that seems to lighten mental load is more specific: hands that trace a size, a path, a comparison, or a sequence connected to what’s actually being said. Explaining that one number is bigger than another with a hand held higher is doing something different from a generic wave. It’s a small shift, but it’s the difference the research keeps landing on.
Don’t force stillness when you’re thinking hard
There’s a common instinct, especially in professional settings, to keep the hands pinned down as a way of looking composed. For an easy, well-rehearsed point, that costs nothing. Forcing the hands still during something genuinely difficult to explain removes a tool that appears to be doing real cognitive work, in a classroom explanation, a work presentation, or just talking a friend through a complicated plan. Letting the hands move with the content, instead of suppressing them for the sake of looking polished, may leave more attention free for the explaining itself.
Treat empty fidgeting differently from purposeful movement
The research draws a fairly sharp line between gesture that maps onto content and movement that doesn’t, so it’s worth noticing which one is actually happening. Clicking a pen, tapping a foot, or drawing meaningless shapes in the air sits closer to the “meaningless movement” condition in these studies than to the gesture that helped people think. None of that is harmful. It just isn’t buying anyone the same benefit, since the useful version is tied to the idea being spoken, not motion for its own sake.
None of this means anyone should choreograph their hands before a conversation, which would defeat the purpose. Goldin-Meadow’s broader point runs the other direction: gesture tends to surface on its own, and it often reflects a person’s thinking before their words catch up to it. The practical takeaway is smaller and less effortful than a technique to rehearse. It amounts to permission to stop suppressing the hand movement that shows up naturally when a thought is genuinely being worked out, paired with a little more skepticism toward the version that’s just filling space while the mind is somewhere else.
There’s a listener-side version of this too. The same logic that makes meaningful gesture useful for the person speaking tends to make it easier for whoever is following along, since a hand tracing the actual shape of an idea gives a second channel of information alongside the words. A hand doing nothing but marking time doesn’t offer the listener anything extra either. Anyone who has followed a teacher tracing a shape in the air, or lost a rambling explanation the moment the speaker’s hands went still and vague, has likely felt some version of this without a study to explain why.
The next time an explanation feels harder to hold together than it should, it’s worth checking what the hands are doing. Empty circles in the air rarely add much. A hand that has quietly started tracing the shape of the problem usually is.
