Brendan Brown

Brendan Brown

Chief Editor & Co-Founder

Brendan Brown is Chief Editor and co-founder of Global English Editing. He started in writing — completing a Bachelor of Laws at Deakin University in Melbourne before working as a writer — and moved into editing in his twenties when he saw how few accessible, professional editing services existed for academics and authors outside the major university towns. In 2012 he founded The Expert Editor in Melbourne, building it into an Australian editing service used by thesis writers, book authors, and businesses. Global English Editing followed in 2014, extending the same editing practice to international clients across academic, manuscript, and ESL editing.

At Global English Editing, Brendan hires the team of professional editors who work directly with clients on manuscripts, sets the editorial standards that apply to both client work and the editorial blog, and reviews articles before they are published on this site. He is closely involved in shaping the publication's editorial direction across writing craft, communication, language, and the psychology of reading.

He writes occasionally on the editor's view of writing — the patterns experienced editors notice in working drafts, the small habits that separate writers who finish from those who don't, and what manuscripts taught him about how language actually works.

Brendan lives in Thailand. He is a co-founder of Brown Brothers Media, the publishing company that operates Global English Editing alongside several other editorial publications.

Graeme Brown

Graeme Brown

Chief Editor & Co-Founder

Graeme Brown is Chief Editor and co-founder of Global English Editing, which he founded in 2014 with his son Brendan. He spent his career in education in Australia — first as a high-school mathematics teacher, then as an assistant principal — before moving into entrepreneurship and the editing world in his later years. He shares oversight of the editing team and the editorial standards on this site, and writes essays drawing on a long Australian life and a lifelong reader's instinct for the craft of sentences.

His editorial focus is the patterns and habits of writing that hold up over a long career — what older writers know about finishing, the slow craft of revision, and what reading widely over decades quietly teaches you about how language actually works. He brings a teacher's instinct for what makes ideas land with readers and an editor's eye for the gap between what a writer means and what arrives on the page.

Graeme is married to Jeanette Brown, who writes on the second half of life at jeanettebrown.net. They live between Cairns and Melbourne.

Editorial process

Global English Editing operates as both an editing service and an editorial publication. Our chief editors oversee a team of professional editors — most holding PhDs or Masters in their fields — who handle client manuscripts day to day. The same chief editors set the standards for what we publish on this site and review every article before it goes live.

Articles published under the Global English Editing Editorial Team byline represent our team's collective process: source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing by our chief editors. We use AI tools to assist with research and drafting; final publication decisions rest with our chief editors. Articles attributed to a named writer indicate substantial individual authorship by that writer.

For details on our standards, see Editorial Standards. For our corrections process, see Corrections.
