People who look younger than the rest of their peers usually adopt these 7 habits, says psychology

Ever wonder how some people just seem to age in reverse?

I’ve spent a fair amount of time noticing those folks—friends, neighbors, even strangers—who seem to glow with an energy and appearance that belies their years.

It’s easy to chalk it up to luck, or maybe good genes, but as it turns out, there’s more to the story.

It often comes down to certain habits, little choices made daily that help keep them looking and feeling younger than their peers.

Today, we dive into seven such habits. They might just help you feel more vibrant, no matter your age.

1) Regular exercise

There’s a saying that age is just a number, but I truly believe that energy levels play a massive role in how young we feel and appear to others.

I’ve always been an active person. Whether it’s going for a jog in the morning or hitting the gym after work, physical activity has been an essential part of my daily routine.

And I must admit, I’ve often been mistaken for being younger than I am.

Experts back this up, suggesting that regular exercise not only keeps our bodies in shape but also improves our mental health and overall wellbeing.

It releases endorphins, the ‘feel-good’ hormones, keeping us vibrant and lively.

One study of people in their 70s solidified this. Lead researcher Scott Trappe noted, “Exercise wins’ is the take-home message.

We saw that people who exercise regularly year after year have better overall health. These 75-year-olds — men and women — have similar cardiovascular health to a 40–45-year-old.”

The takeaway?

Get moving. Even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block, making exercise a habit can do wonders for your youthful appearance and mindset.

2) Adequate sleep

You might have heard the term ‘beauty sleep,’ but it’s not just a myth.

There’s scientific evidence that supports the link between sufficient sleep and a youthful appearance.

As noted by researchers, lack of sleep is associated with “dark circles under the eyes, paler skin, more wrinkles/fine lines, and more droopy corners of the mouth.”

When we sleep, our bodies go into repair mode. Cells regenerate, tissue grows, and hormones that contribute to growth and development are released.

In short, sleep provides our bodies with the opportunity to refresh and renew.

The next time you’re tempted to pull an all-nighter or skimp on sleep, remember: your body needs that time to rejuvenate itself.

Making quality sleep a priority is a key habit among those who look younger than their peers.

3) They use sunscreen

This one may seem oddly specific, but it’s incredibly important.

If there’s one habit that can make a world of difference in how your skin ages, it’s protecting it from the sun.

As noted by experts at Healthline, sun exposure causes most skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging.

It doesn’t matter if the sun isn’t out in full force; harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds and even glass, causing damage to your skin over time.

That’s why applying sunscreen every day, rain or shine, is crucial. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and apply it as the last step in your morning skincare routine.

Staying out of midday sun (typically between 10 am and 4 pm when UV rays are the strongest) and wearing protective clothing and hats can also help reduce exposure.

4) Balanced diet

You are what you eat, as the saying goes. And those who look younger than their peers often have a diet that supports their youthful appearance.

It’s not about fad diets or depriving oneself. It’s about nourishing your body with the right nutrients.

Those who maintain a youthful appearance often have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

These foods are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that help keep the skin glowing and the body healthy.

Plus, they avoid excessive intake of processed foods, sugar, and alcohol, which can lead to premature aging.

Adopting a balanced diet isn’t just about looking young—it’s about feeling young, too.

When you fuel your body with the right nutrients, you’ll feel more energetic and vibrant. It’s a win-win situation!

5) Positive attitude

There’s something magnetic about people who radiate positivity, isn’t there? Their energy is infectious, and they seem to glow from within.

Those who look younger than their peers often carry a positive outlook on life. They choose to see the glass as half-full and find joy in the little things.

Experts suggest that a positive attitude not only makes us more attractive to others but also contributes to our overall well-being and happiness. It can even influence our physical health.

It’s not about ignoring life’s challenges or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about choosing to focus on the good despite the hurdles that come our way.

6) Mindfulness

In our fast-paced, always-on world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But those who look younger than their peers tend to practice mindfulness.

Mindfulness is about being present and fully engaged in the moment. It’s about paying attention to your surroundings, your feelings, and your thoughts without judgment.

Practicing mindfulness can reduce stress, improve working memory, and increase relationship satisfaction. And all of these benefits can contribute to a more youthful appearance.

There are many ways to practice mindfulness. It could be as simple as taking a few moments each day to focus on your breath, or it could involve more structured practices like meditation or yoga.

Regardless of how you choose to practice mindfulness, the key is to make it a regular part of your routine.

7) Self-love

At the end of the day, the most youthful people I’ve met are those who truly love and accept themselves.

Self-love is about embracing who you are, flaws and all. It’s about treating yourself with kindness and respect, and not being too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned.

When we love ourselves, it shows. Our confidence shines through, and we radiate a certain youthful energy that’s hard to ignore.

If you’re on a quest to look younger, remember this: the journey begins with loving yourself. Everything else—healthy eating, regular exercise, proper skincare—is just a reflection of that self-love.

And trust me, when you love yourself, it’s visible. You glow from the inside out, and that’s more powerful than any anti-aging cream or serum on the market.

Final thought: The power of consistency

When it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance, there’s one factor that stands out among the rest: consistency.

The habits we’ve discussed here—, exercise, sleep, diet, attitude, hydration, mindfulness, and self-love—are not one-time solutions. They’re lifelong commitments.

These practices are not just about looking younger; they’re about adopting a lifestyle that promotes overall wellness.

They’re about making conscious choices each day that contribute to your physical and mental well-being.

It’s not about perfection but about progress, about making small improvements each day that add up over time.
