If you want to be more independent as you get older, say goodbye to these 8 behaviors
After immersing myself in the realms of mindfulness and Buddhism for years, I’ve stumbled upon a profound truth: genuine independence isn’t about flashy achievements or material possessions—but in freeing oneself from the chains of self-imposed boundaries.
As I navigate the twists and turns of aging, I’ve come face to face with eight pesky behaviors—like stubborn weeds in the garden of life—blocking the path to inner freedom. From constantly comparing ourselves to others to carrying around old grudges, each one holds us back from embracing our true autonomy.
Ready to dive into the nitty-gritty of these obstacles? Let’s explore them together.
1) Over-reliance on others
As we age, it’s natural to lean on others for support. But sometimes, this can turn into an over-reliance that hinders our independence.
I’ve often seen in my mindfulness teachings that being dependent on others for happiness and decisions can limit our ability to understand and control our lives.
This doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself. On the contrary, strong relationships are essential for a fulfilling life. The key is to find a balance.
Keep in mind, taking advice is different from letting others dictate your life. Make sure you’re making your own decisions and not simply following the crowd.
2) Fear of change
Change can be scary, I get it. As we age, the thought of uprooting our established routines can seem daunting. But let me tell you something: clinging to the familiar can prevent us from growing and becoming more independent.
Vietnamese monastic and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh once said, “We are very afraid of being powerless. But we have the power to look deeply at our fears, and then fear cannot control us.” This quote reasonates deeply with me.
It essentially means that although fear may be pervasive, we possess the inherent ability to confront and understand our fears. Rather than allowing fear to dictate our actions and choices, we should examine it closely. That’s the only way we can disempower its influence over our lives.
When we can diminish the control fear exerts over us, we can empower ourselves to embrace changes with courage—and of course, genuine independence.
3) Holding onto past mistakes
We all stumble along our paths; it’s an undeniable part of our humanity. Yet, carrying the weight of past mistakes can shackle us, impeding our journey toward independence and personal growth.
In the teachings of Buddhism, there’s a profound concept known as ‘impermanence’, reminding us that change is inevitable, and nothing endures forever – not even our missteps.
Truth be told, replaying past errors in our minds fosters a suffocating cycle of guilt and regret. It holds us back from seizing new opportunities and forging ahead on the path to independence.
On the other hand, embracing the wisdom of impermanence liberates us from the burdens of our past to focus on the present moment. This shift in perspective is pivotal in our quest for independence as we mature.
Let’s release the grip of past mistakes. Acknowledge them, glean wisdom from them, but refuse to allow them to dictate the trajectory of your future.
4) Neglecting self-care
The Buddha’s timeless wisdom echoes through the ages with a profound reminder: “Be a lamp for yourselves. Be your own refuge. Seek for no other. All things must pass. Strive on diligently. Don’t give up.” While interpretations may vary, to me, this talks about the imperative of self-love and self-care.
In our relentless pursuit of independence, we often overlook the fundamental necessity of nurturing ourselves. We push ourselves beyond limits, neglecting our physical well-being and disregarding our emotional needs.
Yet, disregarding our health paves the path to burnout, illness, and even mental health struggles. These infirmities can compromise our autonomy.
Therefore, make much of self-care. Get ample rest, establish boundaries, and eat healthy. Self-care isn’t an indulgence—it’s an essential investment in safeguarding the independence we cherish as we traverse the journey of life.
5) Living in autopilot
Living life on autopilot can be an easy rut to fall into. We get so caught up in routines and habits that we lose sight of what’s truly important. And this can prevent us from growing and becoming more independent.
I’ve touched on this extensively in my book, “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”. In it, I discuss how mindfulness can help us break free from autopilot living and live more intentionally.
Mindfulness encourages us to be present, to appreciate the moment, and to make conscious choices. By stepping out of autopilot mode and actively participating in our lives, we increase our independence and pave the way for personal growth.
6) Avoiding difficult conversations
Let’s be honest, no one enjoys difficult conversations. But avoiding them can lead to unresolved issues and strained relationships, which can hinder your journey towards independence.
Buddhism teaches us the principle of Right Speech – communicating truthfully, kindly, and at the right time. This can be pivotal in handling challenging discussions.
So, how do you apply the principle of mindfulness into handling a tough conversation?
First of all, actively listen to the other person and try to understand their perspective so you can respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively. To allow for mindful reflection, always take a moment to pause before responding. The goal is to foster a compassionate exchange of ideas, so communicate with kindness and respect at all times.
Stay aware of your own emotions and biases, and accept the conversation’s outcomes with openness. When you integrate mindfulness into tough talks, you’ll cultivate more meaningful interactions.
Bottom line: Don’t shy away from difficult conversations. They’re a part of life and essential for personal growth and independence. After all, it’s not the difficulty of the conversation that matters, but how we handle it.
7) Sticking to comfort zones
Comfort zones can feel safe and familiar. But here’s the raw truth: they can also stifle growth and hinder our journey towards independence.
Sticking to what’s easy and comfortable prevents us from taking risks, exploring new opportunities, and learning from new experiences. It’s like being in a bubble that keeps us from truly experiencing life.
Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön once said, “The only way to live is by accepting each minute as an unrepeatable miracle.” This quote is a beautiful reminder to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the uncertainty of life.
When we step outside our comfort zones, we expose ourselves to new experiences, learn new skills, and grow as individuals. And this growth is central to becoming more independent as we age.
8) Ignoring your intuition
It may seem counterintuitive, but ignoring your intuition can actually hold you back from becoming more independent.
Our intuition, that gut feeling, is an important guide. It’s our subconscious mind processing information faster than our conscious mind can catch up. Ignoring it can lead to missed opportunities and poor decisions.
Mindfulness encourages us to tune in to our intuition. It’s about being present and attentive to our inner voices and feelings. By practicing mindfulness, we become more in touch with our intuition and learn to trust it.
From chains to change: Cut destructive habits, embrace independence!
In conclusion, embracing genuine independence as we age necessitates bidding farewell to the behaviors that impede our progress towards autonomy.
In simplifying our lives by letting go of comparison, resentment, and self-doubt, we open the door to inner freedom and self-sufficiency. Through the lens of mindfulness and Buddhist teachings, we find solace in the journey of self-discovery and growth.
As we navigate the complexities of aging, let us courageously confront these hindrances, forging ahead with resilience, determination, and a steadfast commitment to nurturing our well-being.
By embracing change, releasing past mistakes, and prioritizing self-care, we empower ourselves to chart a course towards a future defined by independence, fulfillment, and inner peace.
