If you finally want to change your life for the better, say goodbye to these 8 habits
Life can be a roller coaster of highs and lows, and sometimes we find ourselves stuck in a loop of the latter.
I’m Lachlan Brown, founder of Hack Spirit, and I’ve realized that the key to breaking free from this rut often lies in letting go of certain habits.
We’re all guilty of holding onto habits that do more harm than good.
Whether it’s procrastination, negative self-talk, or an addiction to our phones – these behaviors can hold us back from achieving our full potential.
In my journey towards mindfulness, I’ve identified eight habits that are the most detrimental to personal growth. In this article, I’m going to share them with you.
Saying goodbye to these eight habits may be challenging but it will also be incredibly rewarding!
1) Procrastination
We’ve all been there. That mounting pile of work that we just keep pushing off for “later”.
But here’s the hard truth: later never comes.
Procrastination is one of those habits that’s incredibly easy to fall into, and incredibly hard to break out of.
It’s a silent killer of productivity and can have a serious impact on our success, both personally and professionally.
The issue with procrastination is that it tricks us into believing we have more time than we actually do.
We convince ourselves that we’ll get the task done eventually, but more often than not, we end up scrambling at the last minute.
The key to overcoming procrastination is simple: start.
Even if it’s just a small step, start. It’s about taking that initial leap, no matter how small, and building momentum from there.
So, let’s say goodbye to procrastination and hello to productivity.
2) Negative self-talk
I’ve been there myself. I’d look in the mirror and see nothing but flaws. I’d tell myself that I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, or interesting enough.
This cycle of negativity was a constant companion.
Negative self-talk is a habit we often develop without even realizing it. It becomes our go-to response to any kind of challenge or setback.
The problem is, when we constantly berate ourselves, we start believing it.
It’s time to flip the script.
Imagine if a loved one spoke to us the way we speak to ourselves.
It wouldn’t be acceptable, would it? So why do we accept it from ourselves?
I began my journey of letting go of negative self-talk by consciously shifting my inner dialogue.
Instead of focusing on my flaws, I started acknowledging my strengths and achievements.
It wasn’t easy, but slowly, my perspective began to change.
So let’s transform our awareness and say goodbye to negative self-talk.
3) Living on autopilot
Many of us fall into the routine of going through the motions of life without truly living. We wake up, go to work, come home, and repeat.
It’s easy to get caught in this cycle and live life on autopilot.
But, my friends, there’s so much more to life than just existing.
It’s about experiencing everything that life has to offer. It’s about growing, learning, and truly living.
In my book, “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”, I delve into the concept of mindfulness which is all about being present in the moment.
I talk about how mindfulness can help us break free from the autopilot mode and live a more fulfilling life.
It’s time to start living intentionally rather than just going with the flow.
Let’s be mindful of our actions, our thoughts, and our feelings.
Let’s make conscious decisions rather than just reacting to whatever life throws at us.
4) Multitasking

In today’s fast-paced world, multitasking seems to be the norm.
We often find ourselves juggling multiple tasks at once, believing it makes us more efficient.
However, numerous psychological studies suggest otherwise.
Multitasking, contrary to popular belief, can significantly hamper productivity.
It divides our attention and reduces the quality of our work.
In fact, research shows that it can cause a 40% drop in productivity levels.
The human brain is not designed for multitasking.
When we switch between tasks, there’s a cognitive cost involved.
It takes time for our brain to adjust to the new task and this constant switching can lead to mental fatigue.
So instead of trying to do everything at once, prioritize your tasks and focus on one thing at a time.
This approach, known as single-tasking, results in:
- Better concentration
- Higher productivity
- Less stress
5) Always being “busy”
In our society, being busy has become a badge of honor. We often equate busyness with productivity and success.
But here’s a counter-intuitive truth: being busy all the time doesn’t mean you’re being productive.
In fact, constant busyness can negatively impact our wellbeing by causing:
- Burnout
- Stress
- Reduced productivity
It’s a cycle that feeds on itself – the busier we are, the more stressed we become, and the less productive we end up being.
It’s important to understand that there’s a difference between being busy and being productive.
Productivity is about getting things done efficiently, not just filling up your time with tasks.
Sometimes, doing less can actually lead to achieving more. It’s about focusing on what truly matters and letting go of the rest.
6) Fear of failure
Fear of failure is a common obstacle that holds many of us back.
It’s the voice in our heads that tells us we’re not good enough, that we’ll fail, and that we’re better off not trying at all.
But here’s the thing: failure is a part of life. It’s how we grow and learn.
Every successful person has faced failure at some point in their journey. The difference is, they didn’t let it stop them.
Instead of fearing failure, we need to embrace it.
Each failure is a stepping stone towards success. It’s an opportunity to learn, grow and become better.
Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. Remember, it’s better to try and fail than to never try at all.
7) Avoiding discomfort
Sitting in a cozy room, sipping on a warm drink, and watching our favourite shows – it’s comfortable. It’s safe.
But life isn’t about always staying in our comfort zone.
Growth occurs when we step outside our comfort zones and face our fears.
It’s about doing things that make us uncomfortable. It’s about pushing ourselves to try new things, to take risks, and to face challenges head-on.
Avoiding discomfort might feel safe, but it also limits our potential. We can’t grow if we’re not willing to feel a little discomfort.
In fact, the most rewarding experiences often come from doing things that scare us. So let’s embrace discomfort as an essential part of growth.
8) Neglecting self-care
In the hustle and bustle of life, we often forget to take care of ourselves.
We’re so focused on meeting deadlines, fulfilling responsibilities, and achieving goals that we neglect our own health and well-being.
But here’s a reminder: you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Neglecting self-care can lead to burnout and negatively impact all aspects of our lives. So let’s make self-care a priority.
Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, meditating, or just taking a few minutes to breathe deeply – find what works for you and make it a part of your routine.
Wrapping it up: It’s all about choice
When it comes to improving our lives, the power lies within us. It’s about the choices we make every day.
The choice to let go of harmful habits, the choice to embrace growth, and the choice to live life on our terms.
These eight habits we’ve discussed are just the tip of the iceberg. There are countless other habits that could be holding us back without us even realizing it.
The key is to be mindful and reflective. To assess our actions, our thoughts, and our behaviors.
In my book, “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”, I delve deeper into the art of mindfulness and how it can help us lead a more fulfilling life.
So as you move forward, remember that it’s all about choice.
We can choose to stay stuck in our old habits, or we can choose to break free and create a life that truly reflects who we are and who we aspire to be.
