If you don’t want to have regrets later in life, follow these 5 steps
Picture this: you’re looking back on your life, maybe many years from now. What would you see? A series of moments you savored, dreams pursued, and goals fulfilled—or a parade of opportunities missed, overshadowed by regret?
The life you envision depends on the choices you make today. If you don’t want to have regrets later in life, consider following these five pivotal steps, based on the powerful, evidence-based model from my online course, Reset Your Life Compass.
The method for following these steps is based on self-coaching, using a combination of expressive writing and deep, reflective questioning. By journaling and answering guided questions, you give yourself the space to explore your thoughts, clarify your values, and develop a meaningful action plan.
Neuroscience research shows that journaling can reduce stress, boost your mood, and even rewire your brain, enhancing self-awareness and promoting emotional well-being. Through this transformative process, you’ll gain clarity and make conscious choices that align with your vision.
1. Reflect on your current world
To move forward meaningfully, you need to understand where you are now. Start by conducting a life satisfaction review. Ask yourself: Which areas of my life are thriving, and which could use attention? What’s currently bringing me joy, and where do I feel dissatisfaction or longing? As you reflect, dig deeper into your values. Identifying your core values will ground your decisions and illuminate the direction that feels most fulfilling. These questions help lay the foundation for a life well-lived.
Later in the article you will see My Life Review video which walks you through three simple steps to help you create a vision for a fulfilling and meaningful retirement.
2. Develop a vision for the future
Once you’ve pinpointed your values, it’s time to dream. What does a meaningful, purpose-driven life look like for you? Craft a vision of the future that makes your heart race and your soul sing. This vision isn’t about perfection; it’s about alignment. It’s your North Star, guiding you to live intentionally. From envisioning your ideal relationships to defining career achievements or personal growth aspirations, don’t be afraid to dream big. Remember, clarity is key.
One way of developing your vision is to write yourself a letter in the future. Imagine your ideal life, what you have accomplished and the values you live by. Describe how you feel about yourself and what you have achieved.
3. Set SMART, meaningful goals
Your vision will remain a dream without an action plan, and that’s where goal-setting comes in. Using the SMART framework—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound—map out your meaningful goals.
I recommend setting three key goals: two for external circumstances, such as career or lifestyle changes, and one focused on your inner well-being as at the end of the day it is how you are inside that counts.
Make sure your goals resonate with your values and vision, ensuring they drive genuine satisfaction and enjoyment rather than fleeting accomplishments.
4. Develop a personal blueprint for action
Even the best-laid plans can falter without a robust blueprint. In this step, detail the actions you need to take, breaking them into manageable tasks. Establish regular check-ins to monitor your progress and stay on track. This is where the magic happens: the daily habits you form and the commitment you maintain bring your goals to life.
In Reset Your Life Compass, I offer evidence-based strategies and actions from well-known experts on habit change, mindfulness practices, and self-compassion to help you stay motivated and resilient.
5. Take stock and evaluate
Finally, embrace the cyclical nature of growth. Regularly take stock of your progress, celebrate your wins, and evaluate any setbacks with self-compassion.
Life isn’t static, and your goals may need tweaking as you grow and learn. This isn’t failure—it’s evolution. Start the reflection process anew, recalibrating as necessary to stay true to your values and vision.
