If you can’t remember the last time you felt truly relaxed, it might be time to ditch these 7 habits

When was the last time you felt genuinely relaxed? Not just a momentary break, but truly at ease—mind, body, and soul?

For many of us, that kind of relaxation feels more like a distant memory than a regular part of life.

In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become such constant companions that we’ve almost forgotten what it means to unwind fully. But what if the key to reclaiming your peace of mind lies in breaking a few subtle, everyday habits?

It might be time to ditch these seven habits that could be keeping you stuck in overdrive. Ready to feel calm again?

Let’s dive in.

1) Holding on to negative emotions

I’m sure you’ve heard that keeping your negative emotions pent up isn’t healthy, right?

Well, it’s more than just unhealthy. It’s a significant barrier to relaxation.

Negative emotions – such as anger, sadness, or fear – can be quite taxing. They consume a lot of mental energy and can keep us in a constant state of stress or discomfort.

Simply put, if you’re holding onto negative emotions, it’s going to be really hard to relax.

The solution?

Allow yourself to feel these emotions fully, and then let them go. As the renowned psychologist Carl Jung once said, “What you resist not only persists but will grow in size.”

It’s not easy, but it’s an essential step toward true relaxation.

2) Overloading your day

This one was a personal struggle for me. In the initial stages of starting Hack Spirit, I often felt the pressure to be constantly productive, to squeeze every last drop out of my day.

The problem with this approach was that it left me feeling stressed and overwhelmed. There was no room for relaxation because every minute of my day was accounted for.

I had to learn to stop overloading my day and to leave some gaps in my schedule for downtime. Time to breathe, time to relax.

Once I started doing this, I noticed a significant decrease in my stress levels and found myself feeling truly relaxed more often.

Take it from me: don’t jam-pack your day with tasks. Give yourself room to breathe and relax. Your mind and body will thank you.

3) Neglecting self-care

Do you ever feel like you’re running on empty, with no time to take care of yourself?

As noted by the folks at Psych Central, neglecting self-care is linked to feelings of hopelessness, reduced work performance, and worsening mental health symptoms like depression or anxiety. Hardly a recipe for relaxation, right?

On the flip side, the benefits of self-care are profound— increased happiness, improved productivity, and a much lower chance of burnout. But here’s the trick: you have to treat self-care like any other commitment. Schedule it, make it non-negotiable.

For me, my self-care routine involves quiet morning walks and journaling, but for you, it might be a relaxing bath, a good book, or even a short meditation session. The important thing is to prioritize it—your peace of mind depends on it.

4) Failing to establish boundaries

Boundaries are critical for maintaining mental health and promoting relaxation.

This is well-acknowledged by experts. For instance, Dana Gionta, a psychologist and executive coach, noted in a Psychology Today post that “Boundaries help protect us, preserve our physical and emotional energy, and live our values and standards.”

Basically, when we don’t set clear boundaries, we can end up feeling used, undervalued, and stressed. This can lead to burnout and considerably hinder our ability to relax.

Setting boundaries isn’t about being rigid or unkind. It’s about respecting your own mental and emotional space. It can be as simple as saying no when you’re overextended, or choosing not to engage in conversations that drain you emotionally.

5) Chasing perfection

Now, here’s a habit that might surprise you: striving for perfection.

Perfectionism, contrary to what many believe, isn’t a recipe for success. As noted by psychologist Mark Travers, “Research suggests that an unrealistic need for perfectionism often begets depression, social disconnection, and a lack of belonging.”

When you’re constantly chasing after perfection, you set yourself up for constant disappointment and frustration.

The truth is, perfection doesn’t exist. It’s an unattainable standard that only serves to increase your stress levels and rob you of relaxation.

Instead of chasing perfection, aim for progress. Celebrate small victories and learn from your mistakes. This shift in mindset can significantly reduce your stress and allow you to finally experience true relaxation.

6) Neglecting physical activity

Physical activity isn’t just good for your body; it’s excellent for your mind as well.

As noted by the folks at Healthline, regular exercise can help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote better sleep. All of these contribute to a more relaxed state of being.

Yet many of us neglect physical activity because we’re too busy, too tired, or simply don’t enjoy it.

If you find yourself in this category, it’s time to rethink your approach to physical activity. Find something you enjoy doing — be it walking, dancing, or yoga — and make it a regular part of your routine.

7) Overconsumption of digital media

In our digital age, we’re constantly bombarded with information from social media, news outlets, and other online sources.

While staying informed and connected is important, as experts note, too much digital media can significantly increase stress levels and hinder relaxation.

Try setting aside specific times during the day for unplugging from digital devices. This digital detox can help your mind unwind and make room for relaxation.

Trust me, your emails and social media updates will still be there when you plug back in. In the meantime, enjoy the calm that comes from disconnecting.

The path to relaxation

I hope this post has helped you recognize some of the everyday habits that might be standing in the way of genuine relaxation.

We often don’t realize how much these small, seemingly harmless behaviors add to our stress levels and keep us stuck in a cycle of tension.

But the good news is, by making a few intentional changes—whether it’s prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, or unplugging from the digital world—you can start creating more space for calm and balance in your life.

Relaxation isn’t out of reach. With some mindful adjustments, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing it regularly.
