If a Gen X still wears these 7 things in public, they probably don’t realize how outdated they look

Fashion is a tricky beast, constantly changing and evolving. But let’s face it, us Gen Xers can sometimes get stuck in a style rut, stubbornly clinging to the trends of our youth.
Unbeknownst to us, these outdated fashion choices may be making us stick out like a sore thumb in today’s modern world.
Let’s be clear, there’s no shame in a nostalgia trip now and then. But, if you’re still rocking these 7 items regularly, you might not realize just how out of date your style has become.
Here is a nudge in the right direction with this light-hearted look at seven fashion faux pas that Gen Xers are guilty of making.
1) Acid wash jeans
Let’s kick off this trip down memory lane with a classic – acid wash jeans.
These were all the rage back in the day, but they’ve fallen out of favor in recent years. Don’t get me wrong, vintage is cool and all, but there’s a fine line between vintage chic and looking like you’re stuck in a time warp.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re still sporting these on the regular, it might be time to update your denim game. Today’s styles lean towards darker washes, with a more tailored fit.
And trust me, your wardrobe (and your reputation) will thank you for it.
2) Oversized shoulder pads
Now, here’s where it gets personal. In my youth, I was a huge fan of oversized shoulder pads. I thought they gave me a power look, kind of like those women in the 80s soap operas.
But fast forward to today, and let’s just say that the “power look” doesn’t quite hold up. At a recent family gathering, I pulled out an old blazer with shoulder pads that could rival a football player’s. My niece couldn’t stop giggling and asked if I was in fancy dress.
That’s when it hit me. What was once trendy now just makes us Gen Xers look as if we’re trying too hard to relive our glory days. So, even though it hurts to say goodbye, it’s time to ditch those shoulder pads and embrace sleeker, more modern silhouettes.
3) Leg warmers
Leg warmers, the ultimate 80s accessory, were originally designed for dancers to keep their muscles warm and prevent cramping. However, they soon made their way into mainstream fashion and became a wardrobe staple for every Gen Xer.
While they were once a symbol of style and practicality, wearing leg warmers today can give the impression that you’re stuck in an 80s music video. And unless you’re hitting the dance studio or off to an 80s themed costume party, it’s probably best to leave them tucked away in your nostalgia drawer.
4) Pleated khakis
Pleated khakis were once the go-to pant style for many Gen Xers, offering a smart-casual look that was perfect for both the office and social gatherings. But times have changed, and so has the fashion world.
These pants, with their front folds and extra fabric, can now make you look outdated. Today’s trends lean more towards flat-front trousers, which offer a cleaner, more modern silhouette.
So, if you’re still holding on to your pleated khakis, it might be time to consider a wardrobe update. Remember, fashion evolves, and so should our style.
5) Scrunchies
I’ll admit it, I have a soft spot for scrunchies. Not only were they a staple in my high school wardrobe, but they were also kind to my hair. No harsh elastics causing breakage or those dreaded hair kinks.
But as much as it pains me to say it, scrunchies have become a symbol of Gen X’s resistance to let go of the past. While they’ve made a bit of a comeback among younger generations, they’re often used more for fun and irony rather than serious fashion.
So, as much as I love them, I’ve had to retire my collection of scrunchies for more current hair accessories. It was a tough decision but one that needed to be made. We all need to move with the times, even when it’s difficult.
6) Baggy cargo shorts
Baggy cargo shorts with their numerous pockets were once the epitome of practicality and casual style. They were perfect for those summer outings where you just needed to carry a lot of stuff.
However, today’s fashion favors a more tailored look, and these shorts can come across as bulky and outdated. If you’re still a fan, consider updating your wardrobe with slimmer-fit shorts. They are just as comfortable but give a more up-to-date look.
It’s not about giving up your comfort or practicality; it’s about adapting them to the current style.
7) Neon windbreakers
Neon windbreakers were a bold fashion statement back in the day. Their bright, almost blinding colors were hard to miss and made us feel like we were on the cutting edge of fashion.
But just like other trends, neon windbreakers have had their time in the sun and now come across as painfully nostalgic. Today’s outerwear trends lean towards more neutral colors and sleek designs.
So, before you reach for that old neon windbreaker in the back of your closet, consider investing in a new jacket that reflects the current trends. It’s not about losing your personality or style; it’s about evolving it to align with the times.
