First impressions count. They can make or break relationships, especially in the first few minutes of meeting someone new.
But here’s the thing: impressing someone doesn’t always mean you have to pull out all the big guns.
Sometimes, it’s the subtle behaviors that really make a difference. These small, barely noticeable actions can speak volumes about your character and intentions.
In this article, I’m going to share with you 7 of these subtle behaviors. Start incorporating them into your interactions, and you’ll be impressing people left, right and center without them even realizing why.

1) Show genuine interest
Impressing people isn’t just about showcasing your own skills and accomplishments. It’s also about showing genuine interest in them.
We all like to feel valued and appreciated. And there’s no quicker way to make a person feel important than by taking a genuine interest in who they are and what they do.
Ask them questions about their job, their interests, their opinions. Listen carefully to their answers, and respond in a way that shows you’re engaged in the conversation.
This doesn’t mean you should bombard them with questions or make the conversation feel like an interrogation.
The trick here is to strike the right balance between showing interest and giving them space to take the lead.
The goal is to impress them, not overwhelm them.
2) Be open and authentic
People have a knack for sniffing out inauthenticity. On the flip side, they also have a natural inclination towards people who are genuine and real.
I remember a time when I attended a networking event. I was new to the industry and wanted to make a good impression. So, I practiced my elevator pitch and prepared to talk about my achievements. However, the connections I made felt superficial.
On the next event, I changed my approach. Instead of focusing on impressing people with my accomplishments, I decided to just be myself. I shared my struggles in learning the ropes of the industry, my excitement about certain projects, and even some of my hobbies outside of work.
The result? I formed deeper connections that night than at any other networking event before. People were drawn to my authenticity and openness.
Being open and authentic allows people to see the real you, and that’s something truly impressive.
3) Use positive body language
Body language plays a crucial role in how people perceive us. Research indicates that when we meet someone new, their body language makes up 55% of our initial impression of them.
This means your body language can either reinforce or contradict what you’re trying to communicate verbally.

There was a time when I thought the best way to impress people was to talk about my achievements, my skills, and my successes. I would often steer the conversation towards these topics, thinking it would make me look impressive.
But over time, I realized that this approach often led to the opposite effect. People seemed to be more put off than impressed.
I started changing my approach. Instead of focusing on my achievements, I started acknowledging my mistakes and failures. I shared stories about the lessons I’ve learned and how these experiences have shaped me.
The result was surprising. Not only did people seem more engaged in our conversations, but they also seemed to respect me more. They appreciated my humility and willingness to show my vulnerable side.
Being humble doesn’t mean downplaying your achievements or being overly self-deprecating. It simply means acknowledging that you’re human, just like everyone else. And that’s something people can really connect with.
6) Show empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It’s a powerful way to connect with people on a deeper level.
When you show empathy, you’re telling the other person that you’re not just hearing their words, but you’re also understanding their emotions. You’re giving them a sense of being understood and validated, which is a powerful feeling.
You can show empathy by using phrases like “I can see how that would be difficult for you” or “That must have been really exciting”. These expressions show that you’re not just passively listening, but actively relating to their experiences.
Showing empathy is a sure-fire way to leave a lasting impression. It shows that you’re not only interested in what the other person is saying, but also in how they’re feeling.
7) Be consistent
