It’s no coincidence. The happy, content ones they seem to have different morning routines than the rest. They set the tone for their upcoming day on a high note, and it shows!

On the flip side, those who feel stagnant, they wake up dragging their feet, with no real plan or purpose. It seems their morning is simply a launchpad into ‘another one of those days’.

This is what we’re going to navigate. The morning habits that separate the joyful from the joyless. It’s simple, it’s important, and yes, it can certainly be learned. Stay tuned, you’re in for a wake-up call!

1) Early risers

Here’s what you need to know: those who are happy with their lives mostly tend to greet the sun.

Early rising might not be the favorite part of anyone’s day, but the majority of content people link their success to this habit. It gives them extra hours – calm, quiet pockets of time, where they can focus on themselves.

While on the contrast, those stuck in their lives massively tend to have difficulty in moving away from the warmth of their bedding. Snooze buttons become their best Friends, leading them to kick-start their day in a rush.

There’s not much space for peace and fulfilment when one’s morning starts in a flurry, right?

This isn’t to say that you become an overnight early bird. But it does show how crucial the power of a few hours can be, for transforming one’s body, mind and overall wellbeing.

Let me tell you a little something about myself. In the past, I fell into the category of those who feel ‘stuck’ in life.

The constant feeling of being overwhelmed, racing against time, and worrying about everything that’s happening and not happening, was typical. Until one day, I decided to make a small, yet significant change.

Instead of opening my eyes to instantly check my emails, work tasks or social media feeds, I started reserving the first few moments of my morning just for myself – for being mindful.

The difference was startling. Suddenly, I was not just physically awake but my mind was present too. More than any caffeine shot, these moments filled me with clarity. They energized me for the day ahead, without fail.

This is a habit I’ve noticed among those who feel content in life, which was lacking in my routine before. They dedicate the first part of their day to embrace stillness, be it through meditation, a gratitude journal, or a peaceful cup of tea.

Staying aware of the present moment, focusing on one’s breath, away from technology – it’s simple, but oh so powerful.

3) Healthy Eating

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper?” There’s more wisdom to these words than meets the eye.

People who’re living a fulfilled life tend to not rush through or skip this most critical meal of the day. Their breakfast menu majorly includes nutrient-rich foods that offer the body the right kick-start, enhancing concentration and productivity all through the day.

Yet on the other side of the spectrum, those feeling stuck often resort to a hasty bowl of sugary cereal or, even worse, nothing at all. This sets them up for a day of poor eating habits, inconsistent energy and mood levels, and ultimately, dissatisfaction.

Interestingly, in Japan, which is home to some of the longest-living people in the world, breakfast often consists of a variety of small dishes containing proteins, vegetables and grains.

Morning fuel matters, and happy folk seem to know how to harness it rightly. Who knew that breakfast could play such a big role in your daily joy quotient?

4) Exercise and Movement

Ok, I know, exercise is everyone’s least favorite word in the morning. But there’s no denying the link between an active body and a healthy mind.

Those flourishing in life, swear by their morning routine of bodily movement. It isn’t about pumping iron in the gym or running a marathon each morning. It can be as simple as a brisk walk, a quick yoga routine, or even a dance session on your favorite beats.

On the contrary, folks feeling stuck often postpone their physical activity for ‘later in the day’, which never really comes. Or even if it does, it lacks the freshness of a morning regime.

It’s pretty logical, right? Moving your body pushes the blood to your brain, wakes up your organs, and prepares you for the day as a warrior. It kickstarts your metabolism, uplifts your mood, and boosts your energy levels.

While it may seem tough initially, building this habit is worth the sweat (quite literally!).

5) Cultivating Gratitude

I’ve noticed individuals who are genuinely content with life have integrated the practice of gratitude into their early morning routine. As the sun rises, they take a few moments to list out things they’re grateful for, ranging from the significant to the small, like a roof over their heads, a delicious breakfast, or a restful night’s sleep.

This act of consciously acknowledging the positive aspects of life has a therapeutic effect, making it easier for them to focus on the joy and beauty around rather than the stresses of life.

In stark contrast, those feeling stuck generally fail to appreciate what they have. Their day begins riddled with worry and anxiety, causing them to overlook the everyday blessings.

Practicing gratitude doesn’t demand much, just an open heart. And trust me, it’s a gift that keeps on giving.

People who are content in life don’t just wake up to the day, they wake up with a plan. I’ve worn both shoes, wandered through my day aimlessly and also had days structured meticulously, and from experience, I can say planning matters.

Outlining your tasks just after you wake up gives a sense of purpose. Ticking them off as the day goes by brings about a feeling of accomplishment. It’s a fantastic way to keep track of your progress, manage time and reduce stress.

And guess what? During the chaos of my unplanned days, I’d end up feeling unproductive. The constant nagging thought of having done so little even when the time seemed to be flying by left me drained.

On the other hand, individuals who are going through life without any concrete plan are often the ones who feel stuck. They spend more time deciding what to do next than actually doing it.

This isn’t to make your everyday look like a daunting task list, but to avoid that sinking feeling of having wasted your day. So, before you jump into the day, sit back, lay out your goals. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself in the evening.

7) Quiet Contemplation

It may seem like the world of the content and the stuck is oceans apart, but it all comes down to simple morning habits. Another one to consider is setting aside a few moments for quiet contemplation.

Peace. Tranquility. A few moments of stillness in the morning can work wonders in gearing up for the day. It can be in the form of meditating, prayer, staring out the window, or simply sitting with a cup of tea. On the flip side, those feeling trapped are often unable to spend time alone with their thoughts. Their frantic morning pace snowballs into an overwhelming day with heightened stress and frustration, leaving them feeling unsatisfied.

As cliche as it sounds, taking a pause and simply being with oneself is more potent than it gets credit for – a not-so-secret formula of the content lot.

8) Self-Love and Self-Care

One of the most distinguishing features between those who are content with their lives and those who feel trapped is their attitude towards self-care.

The ones who radiate happiness tend to infuse self-love into their morning routine. They take time to affirm their worth, celebrate their strengths, and acknowledge their progress. They invest in themselves, be it through skin-care, reading, or pursuing a hobby. They prioritize their health and well-being, not just to keep themselves fit but also to reinforce their self-worth.

On contrast, those who feel stuck are often entangled in a web of self-neglect. In their haste to get to everything on the to-do list, they miss out on cherishing the most crucial person – themselves.

The message is clear. Love yourself, care for yourself, and the world around you will seem a much happier place. The way you treat yourself sets the bar for everything in life, so ensure you’re setting it high.
