8 things to give up if you want to be successful

There’s a huge difference between wishing for success and actually achieving it.

That difference often comes down to sacrifice. To achieve success, there are certain habits, attitudes, and behaviors we might need to forfeit along the way. It’s not always easy or comfortable, but the end result makes it all worth it.

I’m here to share with you 8 things you might need to give up if you truly aspire to be successful. Let’s unpack them together.

1) Comfort zone

The biggest hurdle to success is often our own resistance to stepping outside our comfort zones.

Believe it or not, it’s nice and snug in our comfort zones. It’s familiar, predictable, and safe. But, as the saying goes, ‘nothing ever grows in a comfort zone’.

Success demands growth. It requires us to tackle new challenges, learn new skills, and face uncertainties. Sticking to what we know, refusing to take risks or adapt to new circumstances, won’t get us anywhere.

To truly succeed, we must be willing to give up the security of our comfort zone. It’s daunting, sure, but the rewards far outshine the initial discomfort.

So take a deep breath, and take that first step into the unknown. You never know what you might discover about yourself along the way.

2) Procrastination

Procrastination is another huge roadblock on the road to success.

I learned this the hard way when I was trying to write my first novel. I had this great idea, compelling characters, a solid plotline… but no finished manuscript. Why? Because I kept putting it off. I’d find any excuse to delay writing – whether it was cleaning, scrolling through social media or binge-watching shows.

Finally, I decided enough was enough. After all, my dream wasn’t going to turn into reality on its own. So, I started setting aside some dedicated writing hours every day. No excuses. It wasn’t easy at first, but eventually, it became a habit.

Lo and behold, I finished my book. And it taught me an invaluable lesson – success belongs to those who act, not those who postpone. So, if you want to be successful, procrastination needs to kick the bucket.

3) Fear of failure

Fear of failure is something that holds back many aspiring achievers. It’s a pesky roadblock that casts doubt on our abilities and convinces us that falling short is simply not an option.

But here’s something unexpected – the wildly successful inventor, Thomas Edison, made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts before he finally invented the electric bulb. And do you know what he said about that experience? He believed that he had not failed, but just found 1,000 ways how not to make the bulb.

To be successful, we must relinquish the fear of failure. We need to understand that each mistake made, every failure encountered, is merely a stepping stone in our path, a lesson learned in our journey to success. It’s not about avoiding failure; it’s about embracing it as an integral part of our growth.

4) Short-term mindset

One of the major reasons many people don’t achieve their goals is because they’re too focused on the immediate results. Having a short-term mindset will often rob you of your success.

Success requires patience and long-term vision. It demands you to plant your seeds today, water them continuously, and patiently wait for them to grow. It might take weeks, months, or even years. Hence, being fixated on short-term outcomes can quickly lead to frustration and impatience.

Just remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, if you want to be successful, switching out your short-term mindset and embracing a long-term perspective is key. Believe in the process, have perseverance, and the results will come.

5) Negativity

A life led by negativity is one that seldom reaches success. There’s something overwhelmingly draining about constantly entertaining negativity in our hearts, minds, and words.

Think about all those moments when you’ve told yourself you’re ‘not good enough’, or you’ve let a setback convince you that it’s ‘the end of the world’. It’s a heavy burden to carry, isn’t it?

I firmly believe that it’s time to free ourselves from this burden. Let’s give up the toxic negativity that binds us and replace it with a powerful sense of positivity and motivation.

Remember, our thoughts often shape our destiny. So, choose positivity, optimism, and hope over negativity. Your road to success will be much smoother and rewarding.

6) People pleasing

I’ve spent considerable portions of my life trying to keep everyone around me happy. A nod here, a concession there, all in the name of keeping the peace and not ruffling feathers. But in doing so, I realised I was compromising my ambitions, goals, and even my personal happiness.

Truth be told, you can’t please everyone and you really shouldn’t have to. Trying to meet everyone’s expectations often means sacrificing your dreams.

So, it’s important to put your own aspirations first. There’s a difference between being considerate and completely giving up your desires for the sake of others. Don’t let the fear of disappointing others keep you from pursuing what truly matters to you.

7) Perfectionism

Perfectionism can be a paralyzing trait that stifles progress. While it’s great to have high standards, waiting for things to be perfect before making a move often leads to missed opportunities.

Success is more often the result of taking bold, imperfect action rather than waiting on the sidelines for the perfect moment. In fact, many renowned authors, artists, and entrepreneurs attribute their achievements to their ability to execute ideas quickly and refine them later.

So, don’t let perfectionism hold you back. Remember, done is often better than perfect. Take the plunge, make constant adjustments along the way, and you’ll find yourself on the path of success.

8) Self-doubt

The most devastating thing to give up, but absolutely necessary, is self-doubt.

This gnawing feeling of not being good or worthy enough can significantly hamper our progress. It makes us question our abilities, undermines our efforts, and creates an imaginary barrier between us and our dreams.

Success is as much about mindset as it is about talent and hard work. No matter how gifted or hard-working you are, if you consistently doubt yourself, you’re undermining your potential.

It’s time to let it go. Believe in yourself, give your absolute best, and trust in your journey. After all, your faith in yourself will be the foundation of your victories.

Final reflection: The power of letting go

The journey to success can often be traced to a path of releases – letting go of habits, thoughts, and behaviors that stifled one’s growth.

The American inventor, Thomas A. Edison, once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” This perspective of his was only possible because he was ready to let go of the fear of failure.

Similarly, for each one of us, giving up things that hold us back is as important as, if not more than, picking up the things that propel us forward.

Think of it this way – a hot air balloon can only rise to the sky when the heavy sandbags are released.

So, as we embrace the journey towards our dreams, let these thoughts simmer gently in the back of our minds. It’s not just about the skills we acquire or the effort we pour in, but also the burdens we are willing to release.

After all, the road to success isn’t just about becoming more, but also about giving up what no longer serves us.
