For years, I was lost, unmotivated, and miserable. These 8 habits gave me my life back

There was a time in my life when I felt utterly lost, like a ship without a compass. My life was devoid of direction, motivation, and happiness.

A familiar story, isn’t it?

But then, I found my way. I discovered a set of 8 habits that changed everything for me.

It was like flipping on a light switch in a room that had been dark for too long.

This transformation didn’t happen overnight, mind you. It took time and consistent effort. But the results? Absolutely worth it.

So now, I want to share these 8 life-changing habits with you.

Because if they could steer my life towards happiness and purpose, I’m confident they can do the same for you.

Stick around as I narrate my journey from being lost to finding my way back to joy and motivation.

1) Understanding the power of positive affirmations

For years, I walked around bearing the weight of my own negative self-talk.

It was like I had a personal cheerleader in my head, but instead of cheering me on, it was constantly putting me down.

Here’s the deal: words have power. More specifically, the words you use to talk to yourself have power.

And I had been using mine to beat myself up.

That’s when I stumbled upon the power of positive affirmations, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

Positive affirmations are simply positive statements that you repeat to yourself daily.

They help reinforce positive self-beliefs and can significantly shift your mindset.

Slowly but surely, I started replacing my negative self-talk with these positive statements.

And you know what? It worked. My mood improved, my motivation increased, and I felt less lost.

So if you’re constantly stuck in a cycle of negative self-talk, I highly recommend giving positive affirmations a try.

2) Embracing physical fitness

I’ve never been a big fan of exercise. The thought of waking up early to run or hitting the gym after a long day at work always seemed too daunting.

But I realized that my sedentary lifestyle was doing me no favors.

One day, I decided to give running a shot. I laced up my sneakers and headed out the door, aiming to run for just 10 minutes.

It was tough, but I did it. And you know what? I felt amazing afterward.

Slowly, I began to incorporate more physical activity into my daily routine.

It started with a few minutes of running each day and gradually evolved into longer runs, gym workouts, and even yoga sessions.

What surprised me was not just the physical changes I noticed, but also the emotional and mental benefits.

Exercise became my stress reliever, my mood booster, and my motivation catalyst.

The days I exercised were the days I felt most alive and motivated.

It was like I had found a secret recipe to combat misery and feeling lost.

Here’s my advice: Don’t underestimate the power of physical fitness. Even if you start small, the benefits are immense.

3) Developing a gratitude mindset

A remarkable thing happened when I started practicing gratitude regularly: my perspective shifted.

Instead of focusing on what was missing or wrong in my life, I began to appreciate what was going right.

I started with a simple practice: every night before bed, I would write down three things I was grateful for.

It could be anything from a good cup of coffee to a productive workday.

It wasn’t always easy, especially on the tough days, but it was on those days that this practice proved to be most powerful.

Being grateful didn’t make the problems disappear, but it did help me see them in a new light.

I realized that even in the midst of struggle, there were still things to be thankful for.

4) Prioritizing self-care

In my journey back to a fulfilled life, I learned an invaluable lesson: self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

For the longest time, I neglected my own needs and wellness.

I was too busy trying to keep up with the demands of life, leaving no room for myself.

But when I started to prioritize self-care, everything started to fall into place.

Self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days (although those are great too!).

It’s about taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health.

It’s about eating nutritious meals, getting enough sleep, taking breaks when needed, and doing things you love.

When I started caring for myself, I found that I was better equipped to deal with life’s challenges.

My mood improved, my motivation returned, and I felt happier overall.

Remember: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.

5) Cultivating a growth mindset

The way I used to approach challenges was, frankly, defeating. I’d run into a problem, and my immediate reaction was to assume I couldn’t overcome it.

It was this fixed mindset that kept me feeling stuck and unmotivated.

Then, I discovered the concept of a growth mindset, and it completely transformed my outlook.

A growth mindset is all about believing in your ability to learn and improve.

It’s about seeing challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than insurmountable obstacles.

So, I started small. Every time I faced a problem, I’d tell myself, “I can figure this out.” And you know what? More often than not, I did.

Adopting a growth mindset didn’t make life’s challenges disappear, but it equipped me with the belief that I could handle them.

That shift in perspective was a game-changer for me.

If you find yourself often feeling defeated or stuck, try adopting a growth mindset.

6) Learning to let go

Here’s something you might not expect: part of my journey back to happiness involved learning to let go.

I used to hold onto things tightly, whether they were past mistakes, failed relationships, or unmet expectations.

I clung to these things as though they defined me.

But holding onto the past only weighed me down. It kept me stuck in a cycle of regret and resentment, preventing me from moving forward.

So, I made a conscious decision to start letting go. I practiced forgiveness, both towards others and myself.

I started accepting that not everything was within my control.

It was tough, no doubt about it. But the freedom and peace that came with letting go were incredible.

It was like shedding a heavy backpack that I’d been carrying around for far too long.

If you’re feeling stuck or unhappy, consider what you might need to let go of.

7) Creating a daily routine

I used to be all over the place, juggling multiple tasks without any sense of order or priority.

The chaos of my daily life reflected the chaos in my mind.

Then I decided to try something new – creating a daily routine.

Having a routine helped me structure my day and gave me a sense of control and predictability.

I designated specific times for work, exercise, relaxation, and even for doing nothing at all.

Suddenly, I was no longer aimlessly drifting through the day.

I had a plan, a structure that kept me grounded and focused. It was like having a roadmap in what once felt like uncharted territory.

Creating a daily routine might seem mundane or restrictive but trust me, it can be liberating.

It provides structure, enhances productivity, and can significantly reduce stress.

If you’re feeling lost or unmotivated, try creating a daily routine. It could be the anchor you need in your life.

8) Seeking professional help

I cannot stress this enough: there is absolutely no shame in seeking professional help.

In fact, it was one of the best decisions I made on my journey back to a fulfilled life.

Whether it’s a therapist, a life coach, or a counselor, having a professional to guide you through your struggles can be incredibly beneficial.

They provide objective insights, helpful strategies, and most importantly, a safe space to express your feelings and fears.

Don’t get me wrong – the other habits I’ve shared are incredibly valuable. But sometimes, we need an extra hand.

If you’re feeling lost, unmotivated, or miserable, remember that it’s okay to ask for help.

Embracing the journey

If you’ve made it this far, I hope you’ve realized that reclaiming your life from feelings of being lost, unmotivated, or miserable is indeed possible.

These 8 habits I shared didn’t magically fix everything overnight.

But they did guide me out of the darkness, showing me that life could be fulfilling and meaningful again.

As American author Melody Beattie once said, “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

These habits helped me find gratitude in my journey and gave me hope for better days ahead.

If you’re feeling lost or unmotivated right now, remember: it’s okay to be where you are.

But also remember that you have the power to change your situation.

Allow yourself to believe in the possibility of change and embrace the journey ahead.

After all, your life is worth living to the fullest.
