9 ways mental health struggles can actually make you a better person
Experiencing mental health struggles is by no means a walk in the park. It can be isolating, overwhelming, and downright terrifying. But in the midst of the storm, it’s important to acknowledge that there may be some silver linings.
These struggles can provide us with unique opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. They can challenge our existing perspectives, ignite our resilience and help us to develop an unprecedented depth of empathy for others.
This isn’t about romanticizing mental health issues, but rather recognizing that even in our darkest moments, there lies potential for transformation and growth. Let’s explore how these challenges can unexpectedly shape us into better individuals.
1) Building resilience
Living with mental health struggles is akin to navigating a stormy sea. It’s unpredictable, it’s challenging, and sometimes, it feels like there’s no end in sight. But just as sailors learn to navigate rough waters, we too can learn to navigate our struggles.
This journey requires us to dig deep and tap into our own reservoirs of resilience. In the face of adversity, we develop coping mechanisms, strategies to manage our emotions, and tools for self-care. Over time, these skills not only help us navigate our mental health struggles but also other challenges that life throws at us.
In other words, mental health struggles can be an unexpected teacher of resilience. It’s not an easy lesson but one that can leave us stronger, more adaptable, and better equipped to handle life’s ups and downs.
Resilience isn’t about masking pain or denying the reality of our struggles. Rather, it’s about acknowledging them and choosing to forge ahead regardless. It’s about transforming adversity into a catalyst for growth – a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
2) Empathy enhancement
Experiencing mental health struggles gives you a unique perspective on pain and suffering. It allows you to truly understand what it feels like to be in the depths of despair, and this understanding can translate into a profound sense of empathy for others.
As I’ve navigated my own mental health journey, I’ve found that my capacity to connect with others has deepened. I can relate to their struggles in a way that wasn’t possible before. This heightened empathy allows me to form deeper, more meaningful connections with the people around me.
When we experience hardship, our hearts open up to the pain of others. It’s as if our personal struggles have given us a new lens through which we see the world – one that’s more compassionate and understanding.
As the renowned Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh once said, “Compassion is a verb.” Our mental health struggles can provide us with the impetus to turn our compassion into action, fostering a deeper understanding of others and ultimately contributing to a more empathetic world.
3) Personal growth and self-discovery
Mental health struggles often force us to confront aspects of ourselves that we might prefer to ignore. These moments of introspection can actually lead to profound personal growth and self-discovery. We get to know ourselves better—our triggers, our coping mechanisms, our strengths, and our weaknesses. And through this understanding, we become more authentic versions of ourselves.
My journey through mental health struggles has been a path of self-discovery, and I’ve learned invaluable lessons along the way. To better understand this process, take a look at my video on why it’s important to give up on constantly aiming to be a “good person.” I delve into how this belief can lead to internal criticism, judgment of others, and susceptibility to manipulation. On the other hand, letting go of this ideal fosters an authentic and fulfilling life.

4) Empowering self-reliance
When you’re navigating mental health struggles, it’s easy to feel as though you’re at the mercy of external circumstances – a helpless passenger on a turbulent journey. But within these struggles, there’s an opportunity to reclaim your power and cultivate a sense of self-reliance.
Taking control of your mental health means acknowledging that while you might not be able to control everything that happens to you, you can control how you respond. It involves owning your emotions, seeking help when needed, and taking steps towards healing, even when it feels overwhelming.
This is an incredibly empowering process. It’s about recognizing that you are not defined by your struggles, but by how you choose to face them. It’s about taking ownership of your journey and understanding that you have the power to shape your own life.
This aligns with my belief in the transformative power of taking responsibility for our lives. As I’ve often said, “True empowerment comes from taking full responsibility for our lives. Instead of blaming external circumstances or other people for our problems, we must choose to focus on what we can control – our own attitudes, actions, and responses.”
5) Learning to embrace authenticity
One of the most profound lessons that can emerge from mental health struggles is the importance of embracing our authentic selves. All too often, we hide behind masks, conform to societal expectations, and suppress our true feelings out of fear of judgement or rejection. But when we’re grappling with mental health issues, these facades often crumble, leaving us raw and exposed.
While it’s undeniably painful, this process can also be liberating. It forces us to confront our true selves – with all our strengths and flaws – and learn to accept who we really are. This acceptance is an essential step in the healing process and a cornerstone of living an authentic life.
This aligns with my belief in the transformative power of self-awareness and personal growth. As we confront our fears, challenge limiting beliefs, and cultivate self-compassion, we become more capable of creating lives that are true to who we are.
In my video on being single and lonely in a big city, I share my journey towards authenticity. Even though the context is about navigating loneliness in a bustling city, the underlying message is about learning to be comfortable with oneself and embracing authenticity.
6) Invitation to creativity
As counterintuitive as it may seem, mental health struggles can sometimes unlock our creative potential. When we’re dealing with emotional pain, we often turn to creative outlets as a means of expression. This could be through writing, painting, music, dance, or any other form of art.
Creativity allows us to explore and express complex emotions that are difficult to articulate. It provides a therapeutic outlet for our pain and can even help us to make sense of our experiences. Through this process, we often discover aspects of ourselves that we weren’t aware of and tap into creative abilities that we didn’t know we had.
This is closely aligned with my belief in the essence of creativity as an inherent capacity within all of us. Every challenge we face is an opportunity to tap into this creative potential and find innovative solutions. Our struggles are not just obstacles; they can also be the seeds of creative possibility.
7) Cultivating gratitude
In the midst of mental health struggles, it’s often difficult to see anything positive. However, these experiences can ultimately lead us to cultivate a deeper sense of gratitude for the good in our lives. After weathering the storm of mental health issues, we can come to appreciate calm moments with a newfound intensity. We learn to value our emotional wellbeing and not take it for granted.
This shift in perspective can make us more appreciative of our support systems – the friends, family, therapists, or support groups who’ve stood by us. We also tend to appreciate our own strength and resilience more, acknowledging the courage it takes to face and work through mental health struggles.
8) Greater appreciation for the present moment
When you’re dealing with mental health issues, the past and future can become sources of anxiety and stress. The past might be filled with regret or painful memories, while the future might seem uncertain or scary.
In this situation, the present moment becomes a refuge. Learning to focus on the here and now – practicing mindfulness – can become a survival strategy. This heightened awareness of the present moment can enrich our daily lives, allowing us to appreciate simple pleasures and live more fully in each moment.
9) Fostering authentic connections
Mental health struggles can often feel isolating, but they can also open up avenues for forging deep, authentic connections with others. When we share our experiences with others who are going through similar struggles, we create bonds based on mutual understanding and empathy.
Being open about our struggles also allows others to see our vulnerabilities and helps to break down the barriers that often keep us from connecting on a deeper level. It’s through sharing our stories that we realize we are not alone in our struggles. These authentic connections not only provide invaluable support but also enrich our lives by reminding us of our shared humanity.
Transforming adversity into growth
Mental health struggles, while undoubtedly challenging, can offer us unexpected opportunities for growth and transformation. Just as a diamond is formed under pressure, our struggles can shape us into stronger, more compassionate, and resilient individuals.
These experiences can deepen our understanding of ourselves, heighten our empathy for others, and inspire us to live more authentically. They can strengthen our resilience, foster gratitude, ground us in the present moment, and lead to meaningful connections with others.
At the heart of it all is the power of perspective. It’s about choosing to see our struggles not merely as burdens to bear but as catalysts for personal growth. It’s about recognizing that even in our darkest moments, there lies potential for transformation and growth.
