9 things to stop worrying about (because they don’t matter in the long run)
We all have our share of worries, don’t we? Often, we stress about things that, in the grand scheme of things, don’t really matter.
It’s like carrying a backpack full of rocks. Each worry is a rock and the more we worry, the heavier our backpack gets.
Helping you lighten your load is my goal, and I’ve got a list of nine things you can stop worrying about right now. Because, let’s face it, they just don’t matter in the long run.
Ready to shed some weight off that worry backpack?
Let’s dive in.
1) Being liked by everyone
Let’s face it, it’s human nature to want to be liked. We strive for approval from others and often worry about how we’re perceived.
But here’s the truth – you can’t please everyone, no matter how hard you try. And that’s not a bad thing.
The quest for universal approval is not just exhausting, but it’s also unrealistic. People have different tastes, opinions, and values. What appeals to one may not appeal to another.
Instead of fretting over what others think of you, focus on being true to yourself. Authenticity is much more rewarding in the long run.
Your worth is not determined by the number of likes you receive. So go ahead and shed that worry – it doesn’t matter in the long run.
2) Making mistakes
I used to lose sleep over making mistakes. One wrong move, one tiny error and I’d spend hours, even days, beating myself up over it.
But then I realized something. Mistakes are not just inevitable, they’re necessary. They’re our most effective teachers, showing us where we need to improve and how to do better next time.
I remember the first time I gave a presentation at work. I was nervous and made a few blunders. Instead of dwelling on those mistakes, I chose to learn from them. The next time I had to present, I was better prepared and my delivery significantly improved.
Mistakes are stepping stones on our path to growth. So stop worrying about them. They’re not worth the stress in the long run.
3) Aging
Aging is a natural process that we all go through. Yet, so many of us worry about it, fearing the loss of youth and vitality.
But did you know that in some cultures around the world, aging is celebrated? In Japan, for instance, there is a holiday called “Respect for the Aged Day” where they honor their elderly citizens and their contributions to society.
Rather than worrying about the inevitable, embrace it. Aging brings wisdom, experience, and a richness to life that youth simply can’t offer.
It’s a part of your journey, and it doesn’t matter in the long run if you age gracefully.
4) The past
The past can trap us in a cycle of regret and what-ifs. We often dwell on past mistakes, missed opportunities, and roads not taken.
But here’s the reality – you can’t change what’s already happened. No amount of worry or regret will alter the past.
What you can change, however, is how you react to it. You can learn from your past experiences and use them as a guide for the future.
Use the past as a lesson, not a life sentence. It doesn’t matter in the long run because it’s done and dusted and you’ve got the present to focus on.
5) Perfection
Are you a perfectionist? Striving for flawlessness in everything you do? While there’s nothing wrong with aiming high, worrying about being perfect can be a huge drain on your mental energy.
Perfection is an illusion. No one is perfect, and no one expects you to be either. The pursuit of perfection often leads to stress, anxiety, and even procrastination.
What’s more important than perfection is progress. Small, consistent steps towards your goals are far more valuable.
6) Fitting in
In a world that often values conformity, it’s easy to worry about fitting in. We fear standing out or being different.
But here’s a heartfelt truth – your uniqueness is your strength. It’s what sets you apart, makes you special. Your individuality is not something to be hidden but celebrated.
Don’t let the fear of not fitting in make you lose your unique spark. Embrace who you are and let your true self-shine.
In the long run, it doesn’t matter if you fit into someone else’s mold. What matters is how comfortably you fit into your own skin.
7) Money
There was a time in my life when I was constantly worried about money, living paycheck to paycheck, always one unexpected expense away from financial trouble.
It’s true that money is a necessity, it helps us meet our basic needs and gives us a certain level of comfort. However, it’s also true that money isn’t everything. It doesn’t define your worth or happiness.
Over time, I realized that worrying about money didn’t change my financial situation. What did make a difference was taking steps towards financial literacy, saving, budgeting, and investing.
If you’re losing sleep over your financial situation, remember that while money is important, it isn’t everything. In the long run, your peace of mind and happiness far outweigh any dollar amount.
8) Uncertainties
Life is full of uncertainties, and it’s only natural to feel anxious about them. We often worry about the future, the unknown, and what’s out of our control.
But here’s something to remember – worrying about uncertainties doesn’t make them certain. It only steals away your peace of mind and joy in the present moment.
Instead of worrying about what may or may not happen, focus on what you can control. Your actions, your attitude, your responses – these are all in your hands.
In the long run, how you handle uncertainties matters more than the uncertainties themselves.
9) Other people’s expectations
Living up to other people’s expectations can be a heavy burden. It can make you feel like you’re constantly under pressure to perform, to meet standards that aren’t even yours.
But here’s the most important thing to remember – this is your life. You are the one who has to live with your choices, not them. Your happiness, your peace, your fulfillment – these should be your guiding principles, not someone else’s expectations.
In the long run, it doesn’t matter if you meet other people’s expectations. What truly matters is whether you’re living a life that feels authentic and fulfilling to you.
Final thoughts: Embrace imperfection
Human beings are wired to worry – it’s a survival mechanism. But the trick is to discern between what’s worth worrying about and what isn’t.
It’s helpful to remember this quote by Mark Twain: “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” This reminds us that most of our worries are often unfounded, and even if they do come true, they rarely matter as much as we think they do in the long run.
So, as you go about your daily life, try to catch yourself when you start to worry. Ask yourself, “Will this matter in five years? Ten years?” If the answer is no, it’s a good sign that you can let that worry go.
Because at the end of the day, life isn’t about being perfect or meeting everyone else’s expectations. It’s about finding joy in the journey, learning from our mistakes, and embracing the beautiful mess that is being human. So let go of those unnecessary worries and focus on what truly matters – living a life that feels true to you.
