9 things successful people never do at the start of their day

We all know that successful people seem to have their morning routine down to a science, don’t they? But have you ever wondered about what they don’t do when they first wake up?

It’s just as important, if not more so. Dodging certain habits can set you up for a productive, positive day ahead.

In this piece, let’s flip the script and talk about the “don’ts” of successful people’s mornings.

I’m sharing with you 9 things successful people never do at the start of their day.

Let’s dive in.

1) They never hit snooze

It’s well-known that successful people tend to be early risers, but did you know they also resist the temptation to hit that snooze button?

Let me tell you, it’s not always about willpower or discipline. It’s about understanding how our bodies and minds work. This is where a little mindfulness comes in handy.

You see, when we hit snooze and drift back to sleep, we’re actually starting a new sleep cycle that we don’t have time to finish. This can leave us feeling groggy and less focused – not the best way to kick off a productive day.

Successful people get this. They value their sleep but they also respect their waking hours. They understand that those extra few minutes of interrupted sleep won’t do them any favors.

Therefore, they make it a point to rise as soon as their alarm goes off. It might seem tough initially but with a little mindfulness and understanding of your body’s needs, it’s definitely achievable.

Every moment counts especially at the start of the day!

2) They don’t start their day without setting intentions

Now, this is something I personally swear by. Starting the day without setting your intentions is like setting out on a journey without a clear destination.

And as the famous mindfulness expert, Jon Kabat-Zinn once said, “Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment.”

Successful people understand this. They don’t just rush into their day haphazardly. They take a few moments each morning to clearly define their goals and objectives for the day. This helps them stay focused and aligned with their purpose throughout the day.

Setting intentions doesn’t have to be complicated. It could simply be a quiet reflection over a cup of coffee or even a few minutes of meditation.

The key is to start your day with purpose and mindfulness, so you can navigate the rest of it with clarity and intention.

3) They don’t let past failures dictate their new day

Isn’t it easy to wake up and immediately start worrying about yesterday’s failures and missteps? But here’s some raw honesty: It doesn’t do you any good.

In the wisdom of Buddhism, there is a fundamental principle that states “each moment is a fresh beginning.” Successful people embrace this wisdom wholeheartedly.

They understand that each new day offers a clean slate, an opportunity to begin anew. They don’t allow past failures to cloud their present moment. They acknowledge their mistakes, learn from them, and then they let them go.

Every sunrise brings a chance to rectify wrongs, to try again and to do better.

Don’t burden your mornings with the weight of yesterday’s disappointments. Instead, greet each day with optimism and resolve, ready to make the most of what lies ahead.

4) They don’t neglect their physical health

Let’s be honest here, it’s so easy to skip that morning workout, isn’t it? Or grab a donut instead of a nutritious breakfast. But successful people know that such choices can set a negative tone for the rest of the day.

Mindfulness isn’t just about paying attention to our thoughts and emotions, it’s also about listening to our bodies and taking care of them.

Successful people make it a point to never neglect their physical health in the mornings. Whether it’s going for a run, doing yoga, or simply stretching their bodies, they understand the importance of physical activity in clearing the mind and setting up a productive day.

Moreover, they prioritize a healthy breakfast. They know that fueling their bodies with the right nutrients is essential for sustained energy and focus throughout the day.

Your body is your temple and how you treat it in the morning greatly impacts how you function during the day. Make mindful choices!

5) They don’t let their ego run the show

This is something I’ve learned first-hand and even written about in my book, “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”.

Successful people understand that the ego can be a relentless taskmaster. It’s always demanding, always pushing for more, often at the cost of our peace and happiness.

But here’s the thing: the ego is not us. It’s just a part of us. And successful people know how to keep it in check.

They don’t let their ego dictate their actions or decisions, especially not first thing in the morning. Instead, they choose to start their day with humility and gratitude, setting a positive and balanced tone for the rest of the day.

Managing your ego isn’t about suppressing it. It’s about acknowledging its presence and then choosing to act out of wisdom and compassion instead. And if you want to learn more about this, I invite you to check out my book on Amazon. It offers some great insights into achieving this balance.

6) They don’t ignore their negative emotions

Let’s be honest, we all wake up on the wrong side of the bed sometimes. But successful people don’t just brush those feelings under the rug and pretend everything’s fine.

In both Buddhism and mindfulness, there’s a profound understanding that all emotions, even the negative ones, have something to teach us. Ignoring or suppressing them only gives them more power.

Successful people acknowledge their feelings, even if they’re negative. They take a moment to sit with these emotions without judgment, understanding that it’s okay to feel this way.

Rather than letting negative emotions dictate their day, they use them as a catalyst for change or improvement. They look for the lesson in the emotion and then move forward with clarity and purpose.

You’re human and it’s okay to feel. The key is not to let your emotions control you, but to learn from them and use them as stepping stones to success.

7) They don’t rush into the day without grounding themselves

Let’s face it, our world is fast-paced and it’s easy to get swept up in the rush. But successful people know better. They understand the importance of grounding themselves before diving into the day.

As Thich Nhat Hanh, the Zen Buddhist monk and peace activist, wisely said, “The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”

Successful people take this to heart. They don’t just jump out of bed and start tackling their to-do list. Instead, they take a few moments to ground themselves in the present moment.

This could mean meditating, journaling, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of tea. The goal is to create a calm and focused mind that can handle the demands of the day with grace and efficiency.

Don’t rush into your day. Take a moment to breathe, to be present, and to prepare yourself for what’s ahead. It can make all the difference.

8) They don’t multitask in the morning

Now, this might sound counterintuitive. Isn’t multitasking a sign of efficiency? Well, not really. At least not in the context of mindfulness.

Successful people understand the power of single-tasking, especially in the morning. They know that trying to juggle multiple tasks at once can lead to reduced productivity and heightened stress.

Instead, they focus on one task at a time. They give their full attention to eating breakfast, then move on to planning their day, and so on. This approach, rooted in mindfulness, allows them to be fully present in each moment and accomplish each task effectively.

As you start your day, try to resist the urge to multitask. Give each task your undivided attention. You might be surprised at how much more you can accomplish and how much calmer you feel.

Conclusion

And there you have it – nine things that successful people deliberately avoid doing at the start of their day. These habits, or rather non-habits, are a testament to the power of mindfulness, intentionality, and wisdom derived from Buddhism.

Remember, how you start your day can significantly influence how the rest of it unfolds. So, be mindful of your morning routine and make adjustments as needed. The benefits are well worth the effort.
