Integrity matters. It’s the backbone of trust, and without it, meaningful relationships are hard to build. Unfortunately, not everyone you meet will have this key quality.

And wouldn’t it be nice to know in advance? To be able to spot the signs of someone who lacks integrity so that you can take a step back?

Well, psychology has your back. According to the field, there are clear indicators that someone might be missing this essential trait.

Here are nine signs you’re dealing with an individual who lacks integrity. Keep your eyes open.

1) They’re inconsistent

Consistency is a hallmark of people with integrity. They’re reliable, their words match their actions, and you know what to expect from them.

But when someone lacks integrity? Well, that’s a different story.

Psychology points out that individuals lacking integrity can often be inconsistent. One day they’re one way, the next day they’re another.

You might notice discrepancies between what they say and what they do. Or maybe their behavior changes based on who they’re with or what they stand to gain.

This inconsistency can be a glaring red flag that you’re dealing with someone who lacks integrity.

2) They’re quick to blame others

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that people with integrity take responsibility for their actions – good or bad.

I once had a colleague who, let’s call him John. John had a habit of shifting blame. It didn’t matter what went wrong, somehow it was never his fault. If a project failed, it was because of another team member’s mistake. If he missed a deadline, it was due to someone else not providing him with information on time.

John never took ownership of his mistakes, always passing the buck onto others. And this, according to psychology, is a clear sign of a person who lacks integrity. They’re quick to point fingers, slow to look in the mirror.

It’s always easier to blame others rather than accepting responsibility. But that’s not what people with integrity do.

3) They lack empathy

In the realm of psychology, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Those with integrity often exhibit a high level of empathy; they’re considerate, understanding, and genuinely care about the feelings of those around them.

On the other hand, individuals who lack integrity can seem indifferent to others’ feelings. They might dismiss your emotions or seem unusually cold in situations that call for compassion.

Interestingly, a study published in the Journal of Business Ethics found a direct correlation between empathy and ethical behavior. Essentially, those who showed more empathy were more likely to behave ethically – a key component of integrity.

So if you’re dealing with someone who seems to shrug off the emotions of others, it may be a sign that they’re not as trustworthy as you’d hope.

4) They’re secretive

Transparency breeds trust. That’s a fact. People with integrity tend to be open and honest about their actions and intentions. They don’t feel the need to hide because they have nothing to hide.

But when someone is constantly secretive, it can be a sign of a lack of integrity. Do they avoid questions, give vague responses, or seem evasive when you ask for details? These could all be red flags.

Remember, honesty is at the heart of integrity. And if someone is being unnecessarily secretive, it might be time to question their motives.

5) They break promises

Promises are powerful. When someone makes a promise, they’re giving their word, they’re vowing to do something. And when that person has integrity, they do everything they can to keep that promise.

But a person lacking integrity? They might make promises easily, and break them just as easily. They may make grandiose pledges to impress others or get what they want, with no real intention of following through.

When someone consistently breaks their promises, it can be a glaring sign of a lack of integrity. Keep an eye out for this behavior. It’s more than just disappointing—it’s a fundamental breach of trust.

6) They exploit others

There’s something truly heartbreaking about seeing someone take advantage of another person’s kindness or vulnerability. It’s a painful reminder that not everyone values empathy, compassion, and fairness.

People with integrity respect the rights and dignity of others. They believe in fairness and reciprocity. They don’t use people for their own gains.

But someone without integrity? They may see others as tools to be used, stepping stones on their path to success. They might take more than they give, exploit the kindness of others, or use manipulation to get what they want.

Exploitation of others is a clear sign you’re dealing with someone lacking integrity. It’s an ugly trait that speaks volumes about a person’s character.

7) They lie frequently

The truth is, we all tell little white lies from time to time. It’s part of being human. But there’s a world of difference between a harmless fib and a pattern of continual dishonesty.

I remember growing up with a childhood friend who always seemed to stretch the truth. It started with small, seemingly harmless exaggerations, but over time, it became clear that this was more than just a habit. It was almost as if lying had become second nature to him.

Over time, I realized that his lies weren’t just damaging his own credibility; they were also hurting those around him. His lies created confusion, mistrust, and often led to unnecessary drama.

Frequent lying is a telltale sign of someone who lacks integrity. If you constantly find yourself doubting the words of someone because their stories don’t add up or their claims seem too good to be true, it’s worth taking a closer look at their character.

8) They’re always playing the victim

Life throws us all curveballs, and it’s natural to feel down or upset when things don’t go our way. However, people with integrity understand that adversity is a part of life, and they take responsibility for their actions.

On the contrary, those lacking integrity often play the victim. They blame external factors for their mistakes and misfortunes, rarely accepting responsibility for their actions. They portray themselves as the hapless victim, constantly at the mercy of a cruel world.

If you notice that someone always seems to be on the receiving end of bad luck, and never admits to any personal faults or mistakes, it could be a sign they lack integrity. Remember, we all face obstacles in life, but how we handle them says a lot about our character.

9) They lack remorse

When we do something wrong, it’s natural to feel remorse. It’s this emotional response that prompts us to apologize, make amends, and learn from our mistakes.

But individuals lacking integrity often don’t experience this sense of remorse. They might make mistakes or hurt others, but they don’t truly feel sorry. Instead, they may shrug it off, make excuses, or even blame others for their actions.

If someone continually shows a lack of remorse for their wrongdoings, it’s a significant sign they lack integrity. Remember, a genuine apology is more than just words—it’s acknowledgment of a mistake and a commitment to change. Without remorse, there can be no real growth or improvement.
