Winning at life isn’t about luck; it’s about habits. Successful people have certain habits that give them an edge.

They don’t just stumble upon success. They cultivate it, nurture it, and more importantly, they work for it.

These habits are unique to successful individuals, setting them apart from the crowd. And guess what? You can adopt these habits too.

In this article, we’ll explore 8 unique habits of successful people who always seem to win at life.

Let’s get started.

1) They set goals

Successful people don’t just drift through life. They have a clear direction, a destination they are striving towards.

And it’s not just about setting goals but setting SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

It’s like setting the GPS before you embark on a journey. You need to know where you’re headed and what your final destination is.

Having clear goals gives them purpose and motivation. It keeps them focused, drives their decisions, and guides their actions.

2) They embrace failure

This might sound counterintuitive, but let me share a personal story that clarifies this.

A few years back, I decided to try my hand at writing. I had always loved words and storytelling, so I thought, why not? I wrote a novel and sent it to multiple publishers, only to be met with rejection after rejection.

I was devastated. I thought about giving up. But then, I realized that these rejections weren’t the end of the world. They were lessons. Each one taught me something about my writing and how I could improve it.

So, I picked myself up, dusted myself off and went back to the drawing board. I worked on my writing, taking into account all the feedback I had received.

A year later, I sent out my revised manuscript. It was accepted by a publisher and has since been published.

The point is, successful people don’t see failure as a setback but as a stepping stone to success. They understand that failure is part of the process and that it’s through failing that we learn and grow.

3) They prioritize health

We often associate success with long hours at the office, sleepless nights, and a never-ending to-do list. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Successful people understand the importance of maintaining good health. They know that their physical and mental well-being is the foundation of all their efforts.

One study found that regular exercise can boost creativity and productivity by up to two hours a day. That’s right, you can literally “work out” your way to success!

They eat balanced meals, exercise regularly, ensure they get enough sleep, and take time out for relaxation and self-care.

4) They practice mindfulness

Successful people understand the importance of being present and living in the moment. This isn’t just some new-age fad. It’s a principle deeply rooted in Buddhism.

Mindfulness is all about focusing on the present, being fully aware of our thoughts, feelings, and actions without judging them. It allows us to fully engage with life and helps us make more deliberate and conscious decisions.

In my book, Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego, I delve deeper into how mindfulness can transform not just our personal lives but also our professional success.

By practicing mindfulness, successful people manage stress better, improve their focus and productivity, build better relationships, and most importantly, lead more fulfilling lives.

If you want to win at life, it’s time you start practicing mindfulness. And if you’re wondering how to get started or take your practice to the next level, my book might just be the guide you need.

5) They value relationships

For a long time, I thought success was all about accomplishments and accolades. But as I climbed up the professional ladder, I realized something was missing. I was surrounded by achievements but felt isolated and disconnected.

That’s when it hit me – relationships matter. Not just in our personal lives but also in our pursuit of success.

Successful people understand the power of strong relationships. They know that success isn’t a solo journey. It’s about collaboration, connection, and community.

They invest time and energy in building strong relationships. They make an effort to connect with others genuinely and authentically. They understand that it’s through these connections that we grow, learn, and succeed.

6) They take breaks

In our hustle culture, taking a break is often seen as a sign of weakness or laziness. But successful people know better.

They understand that rest and relaxation are not just essential for our physical well-being but also for our mental health and productivity.

Sure, they work hard, but they also take breaks. They understand that their brains need time to rest and recharge. It’s during these periods of rest that our brains process information, consolidate memories, and replenish their cognitive resources.

Counter-intuitive as it may seem, taking regular breaks can actually make you more productive. It can boost your creativity, improve your focus, and prevent burnout.

7) They are lifelong learners

Successful people never stop learning. They are always seeking to expand their knowledge and improve their skills.

They read books, attend seminars, take courses, and engage in discussions. They seek feedback and are open to criticism because they know it’s a chance to learn and grow.

They understand that the more they learn, the more equipped they are to adapt to changes and seize opportunities that come their way.

In this fast-paced world, where change is the only constant, lifelong learning is not just a habit; it’s a survival skill.

8) They practice gratitude

Successful people understand the power of gratitude. They don’t take their achievements, their privileges, or the people in their lives for granted.

Instead, they appreciate what they have and express their gratitude regularly. This doesn’t just make them more likable; it also makes them happier and more satisfied with their lives.

Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s missing in our lives to what we already have. It helps us realize that we are already blessed in so many ways.

The essence: It’s about habits

Our actions and choices, often driven by our habits, play a significant role in shaping our lives.

These 8 unique habits of successful people aren’t just random behaviors. They’re conscious decisions that these individuals make every day to lead successful lives.

Whether it’s setting clear goals, embracing failure, prioritizing health, practicing mindfulness, valuing relationships, taking breaks, being lifelong learners, or practicing gratitude, each habit contributes to their success.

In my book Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego, I delve deeper into how our actions and decisions can shape our lives. The principles of Buddhism offer timeless wisdom on how to live a life of impact without getting swayed by ego.

Reflect on these habits. Think about how you can incorporate them into your own life. After all, success isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. And it’s the habits we cultivate along the way that determine the quality of our journey.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect or doing everything right. It’s about making conscious choices that align with your goals and values.

So take a moment to reflect on these habits. Which ones resonate with you? Which ones do you need to work on? And most importantly, what steps are you willing to take to cultivate these habits?

Because in the end, it’s not just about winning at life; it’s about living a life that truly matters. And that starts with cultivating the right habits.
